Evidence-based EMDR Therapy

EMDR, or eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy is recognized world-wide as an evidence based, 8 phase process that helps clients and clinicians to more effectively get to the root of maladaptively held memories and beliefs that cause emotional triggers, depression, anxiety, even post traumatic stress disorders. 


Through the 8 phases, clients are guided to build resources that create more positive neural networks and adaptively process traumatic and disturbing memories that were previously maladaptively stored in the brain.  The result is rewiring the brain and thought patterns for optimal mental and emotional  wellness.

✔︎  Over a dozen studies have used brain imaging (MRI) to document how EMDR changes the brain!

✔︎  One study showed that 8-12 sessions EMDR for people with PTSD were associated with an average of 6% increase in volume of hippocampus. The hippocampus' job is to regulate memory and emotion. It is known to shrink in people with PTSD.

Finding the right therapist and treatment modality can be daunting! To help you make that choice, we've provided a few answers to the most common Questions we usually get from potential clients.

In the initial consultation call with EMDR Collective, you will be guided to book resources and provided with education that will help you to decide if you feel EMDR therapy is right for you.  EMDR therapy is a complete 8 phase treatment, so some phases feel like traditional talk therapy and others involve the eye movements.  Therapy moves at the pace that is right for each client.

Everyone has different preferences when it comes to therapy and online may not be right for you, however, our EMDR Collective team, along with the EMDRIA International Association have seen that online EMDR is working and effective for most of our clients.  Online therapy allows clients to be in the safety of their own home and eliminates drive time, parking, and the risks of exposure to illness. It also permits our team of specialists to expand access to care for individuals who live throughout the state of California.

EMDR Collective works with clients anywhere within the state of California.  With the added benefit of online telehealth services, we have expanded access to care throughout the state, allowing us to serve clients in San Diego, Northern California, Sacramento, San Francisco Bay Area, Palm Springs, etc.  Our team members are in the Greater Los Angeles area and the San Francisco Bay area

One of our core values for the practice is ensuring that clients hear back from us within 1-3 business days, usually same day or next day.  We schedule consultations promptly so clients can maximize their motivation to get to the root of their challenges and to see results quickly. The great part of teamwork is that if one of our therapists caseload is full, we usually have someone with an immediate opening for new clients.

A free phone consultation is typically 15-20 minutes and provides time for the EMDR Collective representative, usually our founder Dawn, to provide education about EMDR therapy and the Collective logistics. Additionally, there is ample time to hear about each client’s treatment goals and preferences (Why he/she/they are seeking therapy now.) Next steps are discussed and often, a therapist is assigned during the same day.

All preferences for the team member are discussed in the initial consultation and the Founder match-makes the client to the therapist based on specialty and client preferences.  We do our best to get clients started right away with therapy versus having them wait around on a waiting list, which can be unpredictable.

This is a great question and one that is commonly asked.  In answering it, I ask clients to consider if they are seeking treatment for 1 specific thing, like a car accident or breakup or anxiety or multiple things, like a history of childhood traumas, depression, current life stressors and performance at work.  The other consideration in the research is adult onset issue or trauma or childhood onset trauma or issues.  Typically, single incident, adult onset traumas or challenges are more straight-forward and more complex issues that may stem back to childhood traumas or family dynamics can take longer to unravel.  Most of our clients come once a week, but some come twice and as things improve, some titrate down to every other week.  We can discuss EMDR intensives for those who are more motivated and have the resources to do longer, more condensed sessions of therapy, i.e. a 2-3 day intensive. 

Cost is discussed in the initial consultation call, which depends on the therapist and any financial hardship potentially requiring a request for a sliding scale.  We are out of network with insurance, so coverage is contingent on your insurance policy and the OON or out of network coverage.  The Collective automatically provides super bills for services and these can be retrieved via the secure HIPPA compliant client portal.

We absolutely want and appreciate all feedback.  Ideally, you will discuss this with the therapist and the Founder will typically offer for you to be reassigned to another Collective therapist. If a client is not happy with the care provided by any of our therapists or our dietitian, we are happy to provide outside referrals.
